Father's Day in SC

We were in South Carolina on Father's Day, and we went to church with Chris' Oma and Opa. It was nice to see Chris with his Opa and Hazel on Father's Day. We had a good last day in SC hanging out with the Pfaffroth family, eating burgers and wishing we could stay longer.

Happy Father's Day!

Hunting Island State Park

Jewel and I spent an afternoon at Hunting Island State Park. We climbed the Hunting Island lighthouse, which is the only lighthouse open to the public for climbing in South Carolina. It was a great view from the top of the lighthouse and interesting to read the history and technology. The lighthouse originally worked with a combination of flame, reflectors and moving parts that covered and uncovered the flame to create the flashing light. The lighthouse had to be relocated at one point because the coastline was shrinking. Even now it is much closer to the water than it was when it was moved.

The staircase up. Obviously, being South Carolina in the summer, it was hot and muggy on the trip up and water bottles weren't allowed inside. However, it made stepping out at the top into the fresh air feel amazing.

Little windows on some of the landings.

From this view other island and sand bars are visible.

Eating a moon pie for the first time

Moon pies are a Pfaffroth family tradition (staple?) and neither Hazel nor I had ever had a moon pie, so it was determined we need to try one. Each. We weren't allowed to share because that would not give us the full enjoyment possible. Oma warmed each for exactly 14 seconds in the microwave and we dug in. Obviously Hazel was a real big fan.

Haze almost took off her Gross Oma's fingers.

Fripp Island, South Carolina beaches

Chris' Oma and Opa live on a small island in South Carolina, Fripp Island. During our visit this summer we spent a lot of time at the beach. The water is warm, the slope of the beach into the water is very gradual and the sand is soft, making it easy for Hazel to play and have fun. She loved it. On Sunday morning we planned to go to church before we flew out and Hazel woke me and Chris up by rolling each of us over, saying "Beach?" I love my little Hazel and we such a good time. Looking at the pictures makes me wish we were back at the beach.

Jewel, Oma, Heidi and Hazel

It was so hot and muggy that our lens kept fogging up the whole time we were on our trip.

Before we even made it down to the water...

Loves digging.

Heading down for some girls' beach time.

Always finding sticks everywhere.

Oh, these two.

All the sticks!

Savannah

We just came back from a trip to South Carolina to visit Chris' Oma and Opa on Fripp Island. We flew into Savannah on a red eye and spent our first day there. The architecture, live oaks and Spanish moss were just as picturesque as imagined. The most important stop was Leopold's, where we took zero pictures and ate a lot of ice cream.

Inside the SCAD museum. There were some really interesting exhibits.

This painted hall was Hazel's favorite. She wanted everyone to come sit down on the flowers with her.

Other favorite exhibit.

We visited Forsyth Park. It was really pretty running around under the live oaks.

We just wanted one photo in front of the fountain but Hazel just wanted to jump in.
